Syria

"We are in a hurry, said Hafez Assad when asked at his summit with Bill Clinton how soon he would make peace with Israel.” The Syrian president was only 65, but his health was frail. After discussing the topic of the Syrian and the Israelis problem former president bill Clinton was trying to make a peace treaty between both countries. “The last time Israel and Syria talked peace, in 2000, Ehud Barak was the Israeli prime minister, Hafez el-Assad was the Syrian president, and Bill Clinton was the American president. Clinton by then had met Assad twice and spoke to him at length by phone. He was convinced he could edge Assad toward a peace deal. So was Barak.”
